DigitALL Dada: Empowering LBQ and Non-Binary Individuals Through Digital Skills.
In Kenya, employment opportunities for LBQ and Non-binary individuals are often limited due to marginalization and systemic discrimination. Traditional job markets fail to accommodate the unique challenges faced by these communities, leaving many to rely on self-employment as a primary source of income. Recognizing this, ICA Foundation Kenya launched DigitALL Dada, a transformative six-year project aimed at equipping LBQ and Non-binary persons with digital skills that open doors to new opportunities, foster resilience, and drive business growth.
The First Cohort: Laying the Foundation
The inaugural cohort of DigitALL Dada targeted LBQ and Non-binary small business owners in Mombasa County. Participants received training in social media marketing and website development—essential tools for modern business success. By leveraging these digital skills, participants can:
- Reach Wider Markets: Online platforms enable business owners to connect with customers far beyond their local communities.
- Increase Sales: Effective digital marketing strategies help boost visibility, leading to increased sales.
- Grow Their Businesses: A strong online presence positions businesses for long-term growth and sustainability.
To complement this training, ICA organized a virtual LBQ business networking event, where participants shared ideas, exchanged experiences, and built valuable connections. This platform underscored the power of collaboration and mutual support within the LBQ and Non-binary community.
Why This Project Matters
The current employment landscape for LBQ and Non-binary Kenyans is fraught with challenges. Marginalization often excludes them from formal employment opportunities, pushing them toward self-employment. However, running a business in today’s competitive market requires more than traditional skills—it demands digital expertise.
Technology as a Pathway to Inclusion
DigitALL Dada empowers participants to harness the potential of technology, breaking down barriers to economic participation. By equipping LBQ and Non-binary individuals with digital skills, ICA Foundation Kenya is not only addressing current employment challenges but also preparing participants for a tech-driven future.
Building Resilience Amidst the Climate Crisis
The climate crisis is reshaping economies and livelihoods. For marginalized communities, this means finding alternative, sustainable sources of income. Digital entrepreneurship offers a promising solution, enabling individuals to adapt to changing circumstances and thrive in a challenging environment.
Fostering Economic Independence
By investing in their skills, DigitALL Dada helps LBQ and Non-binary individuals achieve financial independence, reducing reliance on systems that often exclude them. This economic empowerment has ripple effects, improving their quality of life and strengthening their communities.
Looking Ahead: The Second Cohort
In January 2025, ICA Foundation Kenya will launch the second cohort of DigitALL Dada. Building on the successes of the first cohort, this phase will introduce new, cutting-edge digital skills designed to keep participants ahead of the curve. The program will continue to prioritize inclusivity, innovation, and resilience, ensuring that LBQ and Non-binary individuals have the tools they need to succeed in an ever-evolving digital world.
DigitALL Dada is more than a project; it’s a movement toward equity, empowerment, and opportunity. By combining the power of technology with the resilience of LBQ and Non-binary individuals, ICA Foundation Kenya is building a brighter, more inclusive future.
Join us in celebrating the achievements of DigitALL Dada and supporting the journey of our next cohort as we continue to transform lives through digital innovation. Together, we can create a world where no one is left behind.
