The recent floods in Kenya in 2024 have had a devastating impact on communities who were affected by the floods especially those living in informal settlements. These floods have been described as the worst in recent times in Nairobi.
The heavy rains and subsequent flooding led to significant loss of life, livelihood and displacement, leaving over 293,200 people without homes and essential services. The long-term effects of the crisis are making it difficult for affected communities to recover even months after the flood ended.
Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGMs) and women living in the most vulnerable areas with limited access to resources and support even faced greater challenges. The floods exacerbated existing inequalities, increasing the risk of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and making it harder for SGMs and women to access essential services.
ICA has been supporting those affected by floods, even months after the disaster. Through the support of our partners, we have so far directly supported over 300 Sexual and Gender Minorities especially LBQs, Sex workers and other Human Rights Defenders who were affected by the recent floods in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Kisumu Counties. We provided relief items, including food and non-food items and shopping vouchers.
We are committed to continue supporting our community members who are affected by climate induced crises, before, during and after such emergencies to contribute to strengthening their resilience against climate change crises.
