Advancing Climate Literacy for LBQ and Non-binary Communities in Kenya.
Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it’s a human rights issue that disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, including LBQ and Non-binary individuals. We recognise that LBQ and non-binary community face unique vulnerabilities due to systemic discrimination, socio-economic barriers, and exclusion from mainstream climate discussions.
We are committed to addressing these issues through our Climate Literacy and Awareness Program-a safe and empowering space where LBQ and Non-binary individuals come together to unpack the complexities of climate change, understand how it affects them, and co-create solutions to remain resilient in the face of these challenges. So far, we have reached LBQ and non-binary communities in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Nakuru and Kisumu.
Why Climate Literacy Matters
Climate literacy equips individuals with the knowledge to understand the causes and effects of climate change, the tools to mitigate its impacts, and the confidence to advocate for their needs. For LBQ and Non-binary individuals, who are often excluded from policy-making and resource allocation, climate literacy is essential for building agency and resilience.
Our program emphasizes:
- Understanding Disproportionate Impacts: Climate change intensifies existing inequalities. For marginalized groups, it can mean loss of livelihoods, displacement, and increased exposure to violence.
- Building Community Solutions: Safe spaces foster collective learning and innovative thinking, enabling participants to design solutions tailored to their unique circumstances.
- Empowering Advocacy: With a deeper understanding of climate issues, LBQ and Non-binary individuals can amplify their voices in national and global climate conversations.
Aligning with Global Climate Goals
This initiative is aligned with the Action in Climate Empowerment (ACE) outlined in the Paris Agreement, to which Kenya is a signatory. ACE emphasizes education, public awareness, and capacity-building as critical tools for effective climate action. By focusing on LBQ and Non-binary communities, ICA Foundation Kenya is ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against climate change.
Why This Matters
The impacts of climate change are escalating, and marginalized communities bear the brunt of these challenges. By investing in the climate literacy of LBQ and Non-binary individuals, we are not only empowering them to adapt but also strengthening their voices in the global push for climate justice.
This work is about more than education—it’s about inclusion, resilience, and creating a future where everyone can thrive. ICA Foundation Kenya is proud to lead this effort, contributing to a climate-just world that recognizes and respects the diversity of experiences and solutions.
